We have meetings Monday nights at 9:00 p.m. in Huntsman Hall. All who would like to contribute are welcome.

Writers

Interesting, persuasive writing is the heart of First Call. While other campus publications focus on news, we publish commentary, poetry, fiction and cultural pieces. We give you the freedom to write what you want, and we don't shy away from printing what some may consider controversial. If any of the following statements describe you, you should consider writing for First Call.

  • You're opinionated.
  • You can translate the taste of a filet mignon, the sound of James Brown's voice, or the suspense of an M. Night Shyamalan flick into words.
  • You love the thrill of investigative reporting, and you want the freedom to explore a topic of your choice for a month or two before publishing.
  • You enjoy reading publications like The Economist, The National Review, The New Republic, The New Yorker, and Slate.
  • You write poetry or fiction.
Artists

Oscar Wilde said that "art is the most intense form of individualism the world has known." We agree, and we want cartoonists, photographers, and artists who will prove Wilde right with beautiful, funny, and insightful work. If any of the following statements describe you, you should consider submitting art for First Call.
  • You draw well.
  • You'd rather lose your wallet than your sketchbook.
  • You like poking fun at politicians, campus institutions, oddball relatives, and others who take themselves too seriously.
  • You express yourself best with a pen and paper.
  • You're funny.
Layout Experts

Layout has not been First Call's strength in the past. Last year, we received a complaint from a disgruntled Daily Pennsylvanian employee who said that he'd like to read our paper, but he found it too ugly! We want two or three layout experts to rectify the situation so that our friends at the DP can read to their hearts' content. If any of the following statements describe you, you should consider doing layout for First Call.
  • You did layout work on your high school paper or previously in college.
  • More than to bump text boxes up and down a pica, you want to define the visual direction of a publication.
  • You've worked with PageMaker, InDesign, or Quark.
  • You are creative, have excellent aesthetic sense, and pay close attention to detail.
  • You want the freedom to take creative risks.
Advertising Gurus

We're looking for business-minded contributors who want to do more than cold call prospective advertisers: entreprenurial students who would like to build a successful advertising organization from the ground up. As a member of the advertising staff at First Call, you'll have the freedom to build a customer base, set our advertising strategy, and create our rate card. If any of the following statements describe you, you should consider joining First Call's advertising staff.
  • You're resourceful, aggressive, and personable.
  • You like the challenge (and reward) of building an advertising organization from scratch.
  • You understand customers, demographics, and market research.
  • You have the confidence to recruit and manage other staff members.
  • You like money.
Web Designers

If you have a problem with the Web site you're looking at right now, we want to talk to you. First Call's Web site, which debuted last spring, is small and static. We want a Web design expert to take it to the next level, with interactivity and dynamic content built on a database backend. If any of the following statements describe you, you should consider becoming First Call's Web designer.
  • You have experience with a server-side Web technology like ASP, PHP, or ColdFusion.
  • The acronyms CSS, DHTML, and SQL stir up more emotion in you than the acronym USA.
  • You're creative, both visually and technically.
  • You'd never dream of leaving a <B> tag open.
  • You want to take charge of a Web project and deliver a great product.
